Climate Code Red Freeze - a BIG success thanks to you all!

What a great event we had on Saturday. I don't think anyone could have missed us on Trafalgar St. We made a big noise, had big visual impact and made a big impression. Let’s hope it all helps in setting effective targets in this week’s Copenhagen talks.

A very BIG thanks to everyone who joined us. It was a real team effort. Check out the pics on our facebook page:

Climate Change Candlelight Vigil

Location

Cathedral Steps

Join us with a candle to show your support.

This December world leaders are gathering in Copenhagen to forge a new international climate agreement - essentially our global game plan to stop dangerous climate change. But not just any deal is good enough - it has to be a Real Deal: and that means Fair, Ambitious and Binding.

The whole world, including 200 civil society organizations representing tens of millions of individuals, as well as many governments and virtually every climate expert and scientist, are coming together around what's being called 'the Real Deal'. It's a simple 3 point deal: fair, ambitious and binding. Its concrete benchmarks are our spin protection against politicians dressing up a bad deal as a heroic victory.

The world organisation AVAAZ is organising a global day‑of‑action called The World Wants A Real Deal. For more information about AVAAZ, click on this link to their website: http://www.avaaz.org/en/.

 eco volunteer opportunities

Volunteers needed for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary

This project is moving into another stage.  We have just received the Resource Consent for the pest proof fence.  We have heaps of work to do before the fence can be built so we are looking for more volunteers.  Two areas where we particularly need support are trapping and the control of invasive weeds.  New trap lines have been created to extend the current area to try and bring as much wildlife back into the area as possible before the fence goes in.  Trappers need to be reasonably fit and have experience of tramping – the area is quite wild and safety is paramount.  Training in the use of traps etc. will be provided.

The invasive weed controllers are key to ensuring the construction of the fence.  No prior knowledge is needed as training will be provided.

Please contact Cherie Johansson on volunteers@sanctuary.org for more information.

Home Garden Coaching Programme - practice gardens wanted

We are looking for gardens for our home garden coaches to use in their training.  Preferably people brand new to gardening, with properties (rentals are fine) which have little, unsuccessful or no garden established.  Low income households preferred.

If you have or know of people in this situation who are keen to have a garden but don’t know how to start or are disappointed from having poor results but willing to give it a go again, talk with them about this opportunity and let us know if they are interested.

Robina – the Victory Community Garden Coordinator will visit the practice gardens in advance, and meet with the owners before they commit to making their garden available to be developed into an edible home garden.

Benefits for Practice Gardeners:

• personal hands-on guidance from coach-trainees

• their garden designed to be as productive as possible

• getting a garden in for spring this year

• food on the table for their families in summer

• plants and seeds provided at no cost

• receiving a set of garden tools (to keep) as a thank you

The Role of Practice Gardens & Gardeners

Each of these gardens is ‘adopted’ by a 2-3 trainee coaches, who live closest to that particular property.  This garden is visited 5 times (every alternate week), for coaches to work alongside the resident and apply the skills they had learnt in the week before - at the same time passing on these skills to the resident.   By the end of the course, it is intended that the resident has a fully functioning garden and the skills to maintain it!

Training Location

Most instructional sessions will happen at Victory Community Centre and Victory Community Garden, with buddy practice sessions at these pre-arranged Practice Gardens.

Call for bike racks on buses

NZTA is currently considering a rule change to enable bike racks to be installed on the front of buses. This could make cycling an attractive option for more individuals if you could for example catch the bus to work and cycle home. Nice way to avoid the current head winds or the hills.

Our bus service across the district is very limited but his may well change in the future so you could take the time to flick an email to

info@nzta.govt.nz

and say you support section 7.1 (3) of the Draft Land Transport Rule: Omnibus Amendment 2009 Rule 10005 to allow bike racks on the front of buses.

Carpooling website available now

TDC has developed a carpooling website which is now ready and they are hoping that you will participate in a district wide campaign to encourage people to carpool for regular and casual rides, by organising your rides through the Jayride website.  Its free and really easy to use and Tasman District Council has added a link to it to include the towns in Tasman District.

Carpooling is the self help version of public transport in a district that has minimal public transport, made up of small scattered towns, and with enough people who are neighbourly and able to share their vehicles with others. You don’t have to have a car to use the Carpool, and people who want to be always the passenger can come to an arrangement with the driver where they make a voluntary contribution to the petrol costs, of about  $1/10km.

5 great reasons to carpool:

1. Reduce your fuel costs

2. Less driving stress

3. Help reduce traffic congestion

4. Get to know people who live or work near you

5. Be environmentally friendly

Go to www.tasman.govt.nz today to see what rides are available, to list a ride or join a ride.

A new way to cafe - produce in exchange for drinks

Victory Garden Café is accepting produce in exchange for drink credits: “Our nod to the green dollar system, we've had great success serving up local, seasonal food made with the best from local gardens. It's also been a great way to network with local gardeners and a fantastic conversation starter for customers while they're hanging out in the cafe.”
Ash is having a blast coming up with Springtime recipes-lots of options for vegetarians and those that are gluten and dairy free. The Garden Café is happy to pack up a picnic for you to have in Victory Square using your reusable containers or ours. They also have compostable takeaway containers if you'd rather.

You find Victrory Garden Café at 143 Toi Toi Street in Victory Square, just opposite the vege shop. You can call them on 548-0965.

Friends of Flora Return of the Kiwi project

After 9 years of predator control in the Mt Arthur area, stoat numbers are now among the lowest in the country and the controlled area is expanding in 2010 to 10,000 hectares (of a total of 50,000 hectares nationally available for kiwi re-location).  After the success of re-introducing Blue Duck (whio) into the Flora Stream, the Kiwi Recovery Group, DOC and the local Iwi have given Friends of Flora the green light to re-introduce the Great Spotted Kiwi (roroa) into the area.  (See more details in the attached newsletter or the fof  website).  We all look up to Mt Arthur, visit it and send guests up there, wouldn't it be wonderful to know that the kiwis are back and that you have helped?

We need your help - this project involves helicopters and specialist dog teams and we need to raise $24000 by 1 December this year, and up to $72000 more over the next 2 years.

Friends of Flora is a volunteer group with charity status, this is the first time it has come to the local community for major fundraising help.

• We will be at Motueka Market on Sundays

• We have Christmas Cards, Gift Cards and cuddly kiwi for sale

• You can sponsor Des on his 1250km fundraising walk the length of South Island "a long walk to save the kiwi"

• You can make a donation by cheque or credit card

• You can help us as a fundraiser

Full information on how to SUPPORT US is on our website www.fof.org.nz - or just contact Peter or Clare of The Resurgence and we can tell you more.
